News design has been been my passion and profession. The field is both a craft and an art combining every element of design, from architecture and hierarchy to typography, photography and illustration. A well-designed page provides the reader a visual overview of the story, inviting the reader in while presenting its underlying theme and tone; it should say: "Read this." The best news designers, like the best photographers, distill a story to its essence while leaving the reader wanting more. My own design philosophy is deeply influenced by groundbreaking publication designer Roger Black: "Content must be brought to the surface. When a design is completed, it should seem natural and obvious. It should look like it has always been this way. Its logic should be clear.” This gallery represents recent work as a news designer, art director and illustrator for daily newspapers.
